14U Spring Vipers Tryouts Dec. 16th

Tryouts for Oakland Vipers‘ 14U 2018 Spring Season are Saturday, December 16, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Owen Jones, 5000 Redwood Road, weather permitting.  Additional try-out times may possibly be secured by contacting the head coach, Jonathan Klein, at jaklein@khiplaw.com.  But PLEASE make this tryout time if at all possible.

In 2018, OGSL will again sponsor a 14U Spring team that will play “B” and “A” tournaments, typically in the immediate Bay Area.  We expect to register for “B” level ASA tournaments, but will also play “A” level USSSA and ASA tournaments as well. It is possible that some tournaments could be in the Stockton or Sacramento areas.  Players will be selected based on a combination of factors, including (but not limited to), skill, effort, attitude, position(s) played, experience (whether in Vipers or otherwise in travel ball) and availability.  Players and families should note that participation in Spring “A/B” Vipers must mean a desire to attend ALL tournaments and practices throughout the Spring season.  While limited exceptions can be made, we expect players to have this as their #1 commitment for their leisure time.  All players must register with OGSL following selection to the team. If selected player has already registered for OGSL Rec league those fees will be credited towards spring Vipers

Practices are expected as follows:

January — Saturday morning conditioning — 1 hour

February – Saturday practices – time TBA — 2-3 hours

March-May — at least 1 weekday afternoon practice, plus Saturday practices on weekends we do not have tournaments.

Tournaments are expected as follows:

We expect to play 5-6 competitive tournaments starting the end of February or early in March.  Tournaments will be approximately every other week; however, there may be some consecutive weekends where we play.

OGSL’s “A/B” Vipers is expected to cost between $500 and $650 for the Spring season, inclusive of new uniforms.  Players without previous Vipers‘ experience may also have additional expense for batbags, sweatshirts, jackets or other gear.  Final cost will be determined in January.

The Vipers Head Coach is Jonathan Klein.  Jonathan is currently Assistant Softball Coach at Piedmont High School, and has coached travel ball for about 8 years (all the way up to 18U); and fastpitch softball for 13 years.  He is Advanced Certified by ASA, a member of NFCA, and does not have a daughter on the team.  Jonathan’s assistants for Spring are to be determined.

Players will also be expected to assist with recreation ball when available to mentor 10U players at practices or Saturday games when possible.  OGSL players in the past have done this, and it has created not only a wonderful community of softball players, but has also helped develop our younger players into successful athletes as they get older.
