Opening Day is Saturday, February 28
Opening Day for the spring 2015 OGSL season is Saturday, February 28 at Montera Middle School from 10 am – 2 pm. All players should be in uniform (including glove) and on the field by 10:15 am for our Opening Day ceremony. Uniforms will be distributed by coaches this week.
Parking will be available at Montera, Joaquin Miller Elementary, and on neighborhood streets. Arrive a few minutes early to park and walk to the field located behind Montera Middle School.
The most important reason to attend is that Opening Day is TONS OF FUN! In addition to fun, great food, and the chance to see all your OGSL friends, Opening Day is also:
- Team photo day. Coaches will let you know your team photo time. Order photos online and make sure to print your proof of purchase to bring to Opening Day.
- A fun carnival with games including a dunk tank, face painting, cake walk, Pitch, Hit, and Run, and more!
- Your chance to buy OGSL swag (t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, hats, etc.)
- Raffle day! Buy tickets for a chance to win prizes including tickets to Giants and A’s games.
- Our annual equipment swap. Bring old equipment in good condition and take some home.
Opening Day is OGSL’s most important community gathering and fundraiser. Bring your chairs, blankets, sunscreen, and cash, check, or credit card. It’s going to be a fantastic season!
See you on Saturday!
What Does Your Player Need to Start the Season?
Take advantage of these coupons from our friends at Sports Authority to gear up with cleats, gloves, water bottles or pants (reminder, 6U and 8U wear gray pants, 10U and up wear black pants). OGSL provides all players with team jerseys, visors, and socks. Teams have bats and helmets players may share, although players may bring their own.
Also, we are still looking for items to for our raffle during Opening Day ceremonies on February 28. If you have something you’d like to donate to the raffle, please email us at email@example.com.

If your family is considering joining OGSL, check out the following video which offers a glimpse of our approach to coaching and play.
The video was created by OGSL parent Bill Swan and records the exploits of one of our spring 2013 6U teams, Flower Power. It highlights OGSL’s emphasis on positive coaching, fun, teamwork and skills development and also gives an idea of the level of play in our lowest age division.
As the girls rise through the age divisions, they become more skilled and the coaching gets more detailed, but a positive approach remains a league requirement.
The OGSL community is amazing, and we invite your family to be part of it.
Arnold Kelly Scholarship Fund
In December, 2012, OGSL lost one of its most devoted supporters and volunteers. Arnold Kelly was an inspiration to hundreds of OGSL kids and parents, and volunteered his services to OGSL for over 12 years as parent, coach, Umpire coordinator, Fields coordinator, announcer, and all-around great guy. An education fund has been established for Claire Kelly, Arnold’s youngest daughter. Donations can be made to the Claire Kelly Fund, c/o the Foster Family, 6841 Estates Drive, Oakland 94611. OGSL has also announced the creation of the Arnold Kelly Scholarship Fund, which will provide two $1,000 college scholarships each year for OGSL players in the current 12/14U division. These scholarships will be paid upon registration for college. Access the application HERE — Arnold-Kelly-Scholars-Application-2013 Applications must include a recommendation by the 2013 player’s head coach, and a recommendation from someone in the community (not a parent/guardian) who can attest to the player’s commitment to community involvement, teamwork and leadership qualities, and/or academic effort. Applications MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAY 1, 2013.
