Join OGSL Alumnus Rachel Sanders in Striking out Hunger!

Long-time OGSL player Rachel Sanders (former youth umpire and OGSL/Vipers player) has begun a drive to raise funds for reducing hunger and to support shelters that will provide food, living space and skills training to homeless youth in the Bay Area.  She has named this fund-raising effort Strikeout Hunger!

This mission was gained from an experience while participating in required community work encouraged from her high school, Holy Names High School.  Rachel was disturbed that there are homeless and hungry teenagers in shelters and on the streets, as well as being her same age.  As a result, she decided to do something to help.  She arranged a tour of the Bay Area Rescue Mission http://www.bayarearescue.org/ in Richmond, and was very impressed.  http://rachelsanders2014.wordpress.com/2013/01/06/bay-area-rescue-mission-tour/

Please read her goals, mission and objective for this project at this link http://rachelsanders2014.wordpress.com/strikeout-hunger/

Rachel’s project was also featured in the April 11, 2013 San Jose Mercury News publications — read it here:  http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_23004408/holy-names-high-pitchers-mission-strikeout-hunger?source=rss_emailed

Arnold Kelly Scholarship Fund

In December, 2012, OGSL lost one of its most devoted supporters and volunteers.  Arnold Kelly was an inspiration to hundreds of OGSL kids and parents, and volunteered his services to OGSL for over 12 years as parent, coach, Umpire coordinator, Fields coordinator, announcer, and all-around great guy.

An education fund has been established for Claire Kelly, Arnold’s youngest daughter. Donations can be made to the Claire Kelly Fund, c/o the Foster Family, 6841 Estates Drive, Oakland 94611.

OGSL has also announced the creation of the Arnold Kelly Scholarship Fund, which will provide two $1,000 college scholarships each year for OGSL players in the current 12/14U division.  These scholarships will be paid upon registration for college.  Access the application HERE –  Arnold-Kelly-Scholars-Application-2013

Applications must include a recommendation by the 2013 player’s head coach, and a recommendation from someone in the community (not a parent/guardian) who can attest to the player’s commitment to community involvement, teamwork and leadership qualities, and/or academic effort.  Applications MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAY 1, 2013.
