Family Night Next Week

OGSL’s next event, Family Night, is scheduled for Saturday, April 26. Your family, friends and neighbors are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets, an appetite and community spirit.

Just for fun, prior to the game OGSL will host a Pitch, Hit & Run event sponsored by Major League Baseball.  Any girl between the ages of 7 and 14 as of July 17, 2014 can participate in a skills test involving throwing a ball at a strike zone target (overhand or underhand throwing is allowed), hitting a ball off a tee for distance and accuracy, and running from second base to home.  There are four age groups: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14.

OGSL invites all our eligible players and their friends to participate.  Please click below to help us estimate the numbers and plan logistics.  If you are interested in helping out with Pitch, Hit & Run or other event tasks, let us know in the comment box.

And Now, a Word About Our Sponsors

February is an extremely busy month for OGSL.  Team rosters are finalized.  Coaches complete training and background checks.  Equipment is issued.  Team meetings and first practices are held.  Schedules are made.  Opening Day is planned.

And sponsors make commitments to OGSL and its programs.

Sponsors are so important to the league’s health because registration fees do not cover the league’s operational costs.  This in spite of the fact OGSL is run entirely by volunteers and spends less than 5% of revenue on administration.

Our sponsors donate because they believe the things which we believe.  That recreational sports should be fun.  That every child should play.  That sports can bring people together and build community.

OGSL couldn’t do what it does without our sponsors.  We are so grateful.  Please take a moment to review the sponsors on our 2014 Sponsors page here.  And if the spirit moves you, let them know you appreciate their support of OGSL and the Oakland area community.

Field Improvement Days Rained Out

Friday, February 7 – Due to the weather conditions and the weekend forecast our Field Improvement Days scheduled for Saturday and Sunday are cancelled.  This includes all work and all time slots.  We will try to reschedule the work sometime before Opening Day.  Thanks to those who volunteered.

Field Improvement Days Saturday and Sunday, Feb 8 and 9

As you know, Oakland’s Parks & Recreation Department is low on funding and staffing.  So, each year we try to devote some time (and some money) to improving the fields that the City lets us use.  This year, we are working on Curt Flood Field and Owen Jones Field — working to fill-in holes, re-set the bases and pitching rubbers, stamp down the batters boxes, paint bleachers and the like.  To avoid the Presidents’ Day holiday, we are rescheduling the field improvement days as follows:

Saturday, February 8 — CURT FLOOD FIELD (Laguna Way just above Coolidge)Sunday, February 9 — OWEN JONES FIELD (5000 Redwood Road)

We need a few volunteers for 2 hour time slots as follows:

10am to Noon
Noon to 2pm
2pm to 4pm

Ideally, all we really need is 4 volunteers in each slot.   Please email our Fields Director — Chris Plue, at ChrisP@webcor.com, to confirm your availability.  Be prepared to wear work gloves, and help us make our fields ready for the upcoming season!!!

Spring Registration BIG Success

Almost 250 girls registered for OGSL’s 2014 season, the best showing in many years.  OGSL will accept late registrations for a few more weeks, but roster spots are not guaranteed.

We think one reason for this success is because OGSL is about softball, of course, but it is also about community.  This year more girls will experience the fun, friends and sportsmanship for which OGSL is known and all the benefits girls athletics confer.

Another important part of our success is the OGSL Communications Team, a group of OGSL parents who agree to post flyers or banners and make announcements at their schools on OGSL’s behalf.  OGSL thanks the Communications Team for their dedication to spreading the word.

Start throwing the softball around when you have a chance!  Spring practice will start before too long.

Considering Softball?  See Our 6U Program in Action!

If your family is considering joining OGSL, check out the following video which offers a glimpse of our approach to coaching and play.

The video was created by OGSL parent Bill Swan and records the exploits of one of our spring 2013 6U teams, Flower Power.  It highlights OGSL’s emphasis on positive coaching, fun, teamwork and skills development and also gives an idea of the level of play in our lowest age division.

As the girls rise through the age divisions, they become more skilled and the coaching gets more detailed, but a positive approach remains a league requirement.

The OGSL community is amazing, and we invite your family to be part of it.

The Next Fall Clinic is December 1, 2013!

Weather permitting, our next set of clinics is set for Sunday, December 1, and will focus on hitting!  Kids should bring their own bats and helmets if they prefer their own.  Otherwise, we will have the necessary equipment.  Clinics are open to ALL — present, former, or interested softball players.  A $5 donation is requested to cover field, equipment and instructor costs.

However, to ensure we have enough coaching assistance, we do request RSVP’s to the following addresses (dependent on which clinic you are attending):

Beginners hitting (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.) (for 6U or 8U aged kids interested in the basics — how to hold a bat, how to swing, etc…)  RSVP here –  http://whoozin.com/WRV-KKW-WC7Y

Intermediates hitting (2 p.m. to 3 p.m.) (for 8U to 12/14U kids who have the basic skills, but want work on proper technique, hip movement, where to watch the ball…) RSVP here — http://whoozin.com/WRV-KKW-WC74

Advanced hitting (3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.) (for 10U to 12/14U kids who are skilled, but want a little more personalized attention, work on a particular type of approach or other advanced skills.  This clinic is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for kids interested in playing summer tournament ball.) RSVP here — http://whoozin.com/WRV-KKW-WC7P.

Arnold Kelly Scholarship Fund

In December, 2012, OGSL lost one of its most devoted supporters and volunteers.  Arnold Kelly was an inspiration to hundreds of OGSL kids and parents, and volunteered his services to OGSL for over 12 years as parent, coach, Umpire coordinator, Fields coordinator, announcer, and all-around great guy. An education fund has been established for Claire Kelly, Arnold’s youngest daughter. Donations can be made to the Claire Kelly Fund, c/o the Foster Family, 6841 Estates Drive, Oakland 94611. OGSL has also announced the creation of the Arnold Kelly Scholarship Fund, which will provide two $1,000 college scholarships each year for OGSL players in the current 12/14U division.  These scholarships will be paid upon registration for college.  Access the application HERE –  Arnold-Kelly-Scholars-Application-2013 Applications must include a recommendation by the 2013 player’s head coach, and a recommendation from someone in the community (not a parent/guardian) who can attest to the player’s commitment to community involvement, teamwork and leadership qualities, and/or academic effort.  Applications MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAY 1, 2013.
